Tom Mahairas

Tom sharing his testimony in Uganda

Tom was born, Anastasios Mahairas, September 22, 1949, in Thessaloniki,Greece. When he was 8, he immigrated to New York City. It was hard to learn the language and the rules of his new surroundings.  "When rock and roll arrived on the scene in the 1950’s I was motivated to begin my own band. All I began to care about was making it big and feeling good! Pleasure soon dictated everything I did. During the 60's I embraced the Hippie Lifestyle. My girlfriend, Vicky, and I considered ourselves "Seekers of the Truth." Any new idea that came along we would try. In desperation to escape the sin and pain of New York City I made my way up to Lake George. I met a young man named Bruce and he invited me to Word of Life Island. There I met Bob and I asked him, “Do you know where Jesus is?”. Bob sat on a rock with me and introduced me to Jesus Christ by reading to me John 3:16. Bowing my head I prayed, “Lord, please forgive me for all my ego, self, and pride. I put all of it down and I ask you, Lord Jesus, to come into my heart and change my life. From now on you can have total control of my life. Just tell me what to do and I'll do it”. I knew I had finally found the Truth and the meaning of life! I called Vicky, (today, she is my wife, and we have 5 beautiful children and 10 grandchildren), and told her I met Jesus and shared with her how she could meet Him."    Over the next 40 plus years Tom and Vicky would begin sharing the gospel with their family, friends and people in New York City.   In their early 20's Tom and Vicky began a bible study in their apartment in the Washington Heights area on the upper West side of Manhattan, in NYC.  This bible study would grow and they began to rent a basement of an apartment building in Washington Heights.  They soon outgrew that location as well and through many prayers, trials and as it seemed at the time impossible circumstances, they were able to purchase the buildings where the Manhattan Bible Church currently still exists on 205th Street in NYC.   During the time where Tom was founding, lead pastor at Manhattan Bible Church he became very burdened with a vision to reach NYC and the world with gospel.  He began to implement programs under at the church which would cast a vision for reaching the city of NY with the gospel.  This holistic approach to ministry,  where you meet the needs of the people in your area, and earn the right to share the gospel, by being the hands and feet of Jesus, was not common then but is used around the country today.   With a desire to share the vision he had for reaching the cities of the world with the gospel, Tom stepped away from his role as lead pastor and has been a full time evangelist as president and founder of CitiVision Inc.  CitiVision has allowed Tom to use his gift for casting vision and igniting passion in pastors, teachers, and leaders, to reach their cities with the Gospel.

Tom Mahairas, has spent the last 40 plus years in New York City and traveling nationally and internationallyas a spiritual activist. His involvement includes founding and functioning as lead pastor of the Manhattan Bible Church for 25 years, founding the Manhattan Christian Academy, The Love Kitchen (mercy ministries),Transformation Life Center (Christian rehabilitation center for men), New York Gospel Outreach, and most recently, CitiVision, where Tom has been training and equipping disciples for cross-cultural evangelism to reach their cities with the Gospel, equipping and empowering them through outreach events as Vision/Passion events.
